Alexis contacted me early this summer asking if I was interested in Birth Photography. It seems like once a year I get this sort of request. Prior to Alexis I had always said no. I wanted my first experience with birth to be my own and didn’t have a schedule that would allow me to drop everything and rush to the hospital for a delivery.
This time was different. As soon as the request came in from Alexis I immediately started researching everything I needed to know about C-Sections. Before we were able to move forward with booking the delivery date Alexis contacted Sanford and lined up all the clearance forms to make sure I would be able to enter the room and document the delivery. Ultimately it would be up to the anesthesiologist who could decide literally as we are walking into the procedure to not allow me to photograph the delivery and at any point I could be asked to leave. Talk about nerve racking!
I showed up the morning of the delivery at 5:30am not entirely sure what to expect. I wanted to be early instead of showing up at procedure time and wanted to make sure everything was still a go and no plans had changed. I got to meet the nurses, doctors and anesthesiologist, all of which were very friendly and excited to have me, a professional photographer, in the delivery.
The entire delivery was amazing. From start to finish I was in awe of the Sanford team. I was overwhelmed with hospitality from everyone in the room and found so much joy in photographing these moments. Maybe it was the hormones from being a new mom myself or maybe it was the sheer beauty of watching life enter the world, but emotions definitely surfaced during this session and I would do it a million times over!
Alexis, thank you so much for including me in your birth story. It was so incredibly beautiful and humbling. I know you took a lot of risk letting a stranger into your delivery room and letting me see you at your most vulnerable, I appreciate you trusting me and ultimately choosing me.
To the Sanford Team, thank you for being amazing. You are truly blessed to have such a rewarding career. Thank you for letting me document this moment and giving me pointers on the things to come and best places to stand.
