The Future Mr. & Mrs. Bice

Is it October yet? I am beyond excited to join this couple in Killdeer for what is sure to be a fun and beautiful wedding. For their engagement session I was invited to the Bice Ranch and boy was I blown away. The Elk running in the hills, sandy beaches, old homestead, it was everything this rustic loving photographer could have wanted.

We both wanted a small town simple wedding and to get married at the lake, since the outdoors is our passion. Our wedding was easy to plan because the small town of Linton ND accommodated our every need. I did all of the planning with the guidance of friends and family . I made all of our decorations and Image Printing had so many great ideas for the invitations and made it easy. We had a home cooked meal and every simple item came together perfectly and we had a perfect day we will never forget.”-Becca

Ashley + Kyle | Engagement Photography

Life is enough, but so are you

Ashley invited me out to her family ranch this past May to capture their engagement session. We spent the evening riding around in her brothers truck going from gorgeous back drop to gorgeous back drop. It's always a pleasure to travel out to couples homes, meet their family and photograph in locations that have meaning to them. These two happy-go-lucky love birds will also be getting married at Ashley's family ranch this August. Thank you for choosing me to adventure with, laugh with, and ultimately document your love story.

"Life is a beautiful thing. Everyone has a journey and a path. Lucky for me, my path crossed with Shawn’s during our freshman year of college at the University of Mary in Bismarck. Here is a brief version of how our journey started…I remember having my first college class with Shawn. The class was made up of about 200 or so students. Of course me being the studious type, I sat off to the side in the front with my roommates, so it was easy to hear and take notes. To my left in the dead center of the lecture hall, there was a group of “jocks” that came in late every day with their MacBook computers in hand and Beats headphones hanging around their necks. All the girls would swoon over these guys. Oh, especially that “tall” one! As the semester went on, we each went about in different directions with different groups of friends not ever really crossing paths… And before too long, it was the next semester, and then it was Valentine’s Day. On February 14, 2013, Shawn and I’s paths crossed for “real.” I was hanging out with my friends when one of them decided she would dye part of her hair pink if another guy dyed a piece of his hair pink. So the bet was on, and we were off to Walmart to get hair dye. On the way there, my friends started asking me what I thought of this “Shawn” guy. I said I didn’t really know him. I knew he played football. I knew he was cute. That was about it. They decided that we would go over to Shawn’s dorm room to dye their hair. They were trying to set us up. When we got there, things were awkward to say the least. I am pretty sure Shawn tried to hide in his room for as long as he could. Eventually, we awkwardly sat around and visited. Later that night, we were both texting my friend about the “setup.” We were both telling her that we felt the other didn’t feel interested even though we both were. Eventually, she told us to talk to each other and give it a chance, so we did. We started hanging out and hit it off! Our first official date was pretty awesome. Shawn told me he wanted to take me out to Peacock Alley. I called my mom up in disbelief. “This guy wants to take me to Peacock Alley, mom. Can you believe it? Isn’t that a fancy restaurant? I better get a new dress, mom!” So, I got a new dress, and we went to Peacock Alley. We went bowling after supper. The rest is history! Every year on our “official” dating anniversary (March 14th), we go to Peacock Alley to commemorate our first date. Yes, it is quite corny, but we love the tradition we have created!" -Whitney

"After work one cold December night, I tossed the mail onto the kitchen table when I happened to notice a receipt that was setting on the table. This was not just any receipt, it was THE ONE. Luckily, Shawn wasn’t home at the time because I was jumping up and down, crying, and saying “oh my goodness…I am going to be a wife!” I went to Shawn’s city league basketball game after I calmed down a bit. I debated the whole game as to whether or not I should tell him about the receipt I found. Later on when we got home, I broke the news. He was devastated to say the least, yet thankful I told him. He had everything planned out to ask me on Christmas Eve at my grandparent’s house. Fast forward to the week of Christmas…Shawn asked both my father and little brother permission to take my hand in marriage. Of course, both of them said yes, so Christmas Eve would be the night I would officially be asked. My grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, brother, and parents were all present. My family plays a “white elephant” gift exchange game every year, so after the game concluded, Shawn got everyone’s attention. He stood up and said that he would like to have the greatest gift of all which would be for him to take my hand in marriage. I said yes! Everyone was so excited and happy for us. It was such a special moment. My aunt and uncle were engaged on Christmas Eve at my grandparent’s home as well which makes the memory even more special. Although, the proposal wasn’t exactly as Shawn had planned, it was perfect for me! I was so excited, grateful, and happy to get to marry my best friend!" -Whitney

"I was my own wedding planner which had its pros and cons. First, I found timelines of when things needed to be done on Pinterest. Also, my cousins got me a wedding planner book created by the Knot. It was a wonderful planner to use (I also downloaded the Knot’s planning application on my phone which I highly suggest getting both the app and planner book)! I kept receipts for deposits, business cards, and other important information organized in this planner. As far as booking vendors went, I started by booking the main things which were the church and reception venue. It can take a little work to find an open day at both places that isn’t in 2030! From there, I booked the photographer and other vendors. Lucky for me, my decorator was a family friend who is quite the visionary! My mom and I met with her numerous times starting in January until the wedding in October. She took my dream and made it reality! The theme was “Shabby Chic.” My advice for planning would be to take it one step at a time. Don’t get overwhelmed. Keep a to-do list and focus on getting a couple of things done per week. For the day of the wedding, I made an itinerary that went hour by hour detailing the day. This helped keep everyone on the same page. Yes, things didn’t go exactly as the itinerary said they should, but the day was still perfect. Your guests truly don’t realize if you forget to do little things here and there.  One question I’ve been asked is, “Do you regret not having a wedding planner?” The answer is I don’t regret it. Planning the wedding myself gave me control and more importantly a sense of pride. I was proud to see all of my hard work come together on our BIG day. In all reality, the only thing that really mattered about the day was that I got to marry my best friend!" -Whitney
